
Why Some Quartz Tubes Last and Others Just… Don’t
When you’re picking out a quartz heater, you’re really looking at two things: how pure the glass is and the quality of that tungsten filament. We use the same raw materials as the big three domestic brands. I’m not saying that to sound fancy—it’s just basic physics. If the materials aren’t right, the heat destroys the tube. Period.
The Secret is in the Glass (and the Wire)
Most of those cheap tubes that burn out way too fast fail because the glass has impurities. Those little flaws create “hot spots.” One minute everything is fine, and the next, the glass warps or the filament snaps. We use high-purity fused quartz so the heat spreads evenly. No surprises. Then there’s the filament. That’s where the real battle happens. We use high-density tungsten with a very specific grain structure. Why? Because it stops the wire from sagging or thinning out when things get scorching hot. When you use the good stuff, the tungsten doesn’t evaporate nearly as fast. The light stays steady, and you aren’t replacing tubes every few weeks.
Finding the Sweet Spot
Getting the materials right is only half the job. You also have to nail the vacuum and gas-fill process. If the internal pressure is even a little bit off, the filament oxidizes and pops. We spend a lot of time calibrating our filling process to make sure the halogen cycle actually works. It essentially “recycles” the tungsten, putting it back onto the filament while it’s running. But here’s a heads-up: there’s always a trade-off. If you run these tubes at their absolute max wattage, you’re putting a lot of stress on the seals and end caps. And if your power supply is prone to voltage spikes? Well, that’ll kill any tube on the market, no matter who made it.
Just Swap Them In
