
Getting Your Paint to Cure Faster with Halogen Shortwave Lamps
If you’re running a spray booth, you know the struggle. You need to get those solvents to flash off and the coating to cure fast, but you can’t just blast the whole room with heat or you’ll warp the part itself. That’s where halogen shortwave infrared (SWIR) lamps come in. Instead of wasting time heating up the air around the part, these lamps shoot energy straight into the paint layer. It’s a much more direct way of doing things. The Power Side of Things To get your parts cured in a matter of seconds, you need a lot of punch. We usually set these up based on how much space you’re working with. For a smaller booth, a 230V setup usually does the trick. But if you’re running a massive industrial line, we go with 400V. It keeps the current draw down and means you don’t have to run cables as thick as your arm. When you’re pushing 2000W or more through a short tube, things get hot. Fast. One pro tip: make sure your reflectors are polished aluminum. If they aren’t, you’re basically paying to heat up your booth walls instead of your workpiece. Why Quartz Matters We use high-purity quartz glass for these lamps for one simple reason: it doesn’t crack. These lamps cycle on and off constantly, and that kind of thermal shock would shatter regular glass. Inside, we fill them with halogen gas. This keeps the tungsten filament from evaporating and gunking up the glass. Without it, the lamp would dim quickly and you’d lose your heat. As for the wiring, we stick with R7s or SK15 connectors. They’re simple, standard, and let you swap out a dead tube without having to rewire the whole rack. It’s a quick fix that keeps the line moving. A Few Things to Watch Out For Here’s the catch. Shortwave lamps hit peak temperature almost instantly. That speed is great for your turnaround time, but it’s brutal on your power switches. If you just flip a basic switch, that initial surge of power can blow fuses or literally weld your contacts together. You’ll want an SCR controller or a soft-start relay to smooth things out. And keep an eye on your distance. If the lamp is too close to the part, you’ll scorch the clear coat before you even realize what happened. Just a bit of breathing room goes a long way.
