
Stop Paying the “Brand Tax” on Your Infrared Lamps
Let’s be honest. A lot of plants are overpaying for big-name infrared lamps in their PET blowing and plastic forming lines. I call it a brand tax. Here’s the thing: physics doesn’t care about the logo on the box. Shortwave infrared radiation works the same way whether the lamp came from a legacy European brand or a domestic manufacturer. These days, domestic quartz halogen lamps hit the exact same wattage, voltage, and spectral output as the expensive stuff. Getting the specs right If you’re looking at replacements, focus on voltage and power density. That’s where the real work happens. Take a 400V high-wattage tube. It lets you crank up the heat without needing to build a bigger oven. It’s perfect for those high-intensity jobs where you need to get up to temperature fast. But a word of caution: if you’re swapping a 2500W tube into an existing rack, the voltage has to be a perfect match. If you put a lower voltage lamp on a 400V circuit? You’ll fry the filament instantly. Not a good day at the office. The nuts and bolts We use high-purity quartz glass because it doesn’t warp when things get scorching. Then there’s the halogen gas. It basically acts like a recycling system, pushing evaporated tungsten back onto the wire so the lamp lasts longer. As for the fit, we stick to the usual suspects—R7s or Sk15 connectors. They just slide right in. You won’t have to mess with your sockets or rewire your lamp holders. It’s a simple swap. And if your specific plastic needs a different wavelength to absorb heat better, we can handle the specialized coatings for that. What actually happens when you swap them? You can get the same heating cycles with domestic lamps, but don’t just “set it and forget it.” Keep an eye on your PID controllers. Different brands have slight variations in emissivity, which can sometimes cause the temperature to overshoot. Also, check your cooling fans. If your airflow is weak, any high-density lamp—no matter who made it—is going to burn out faster. Keep it cool, and your lamps will stay happy.
