
Let’s talk about Halogen Infrared Heating
Ever wonder why some heaters just hit differently? It’s all in the guts of the lamp. We use a tungsten filament tucked inside a quartz tube, but the secret sauce is the halogen gas. Basically, that gas keeps the tungsten from just vanishing into thin air. It pushes the evaporated bits back onto the filament. It’s a clever little loop that lets the lamp run scorching hot without burning itself out in five minutes. The power side of things Here’s the thing: it’s all a balancing act between wattage and voltage. If you cram a lot of wattage into a short tube, you get an insane amount of heat in a tiny space. It’s nearly instant. If you’re doing PET blowing or rapid curing, that’s exactly what you want. You can’t be sitting around waiting for a heater to “warm up” when you’ve got a production line moving. Just a heads-up—if you go with a high-voltage setup, make sure your power supply can handle that initial surge of current. You don’t want to trip a breaker the second you flip the switch. The build and the “plug-and-play” part We stick with quartz glass for a reason. It doesn’t block the shortwave IR radiation, so the heat gets exactly where it needs to go. Sometimes we add special coatings to tweak the heat spectrum or just to keep the tube safe. As for getting them into your machine? We usually go with R7s or Sk15 bases. They’re standard. Which means when a lamp finally dies, you just pop it out and slide a new one in. No need to spend your afternoon rewiring the whole heating bank. The trade-offs (because nothing is perfect) These lamps are great because they don’t take up much room and they work fast. They’re a breeze to swap in if you’re replacing those clunky old resistive heaters. But, there’s a catch. All that heat density makes the quartz pretty fragile. If your machine shakes a lot, or if the lamps are practically touching your workpiece, things can go south quickly. You might crack a tube or accidentally melt your substrate. My advice? Balance the heat output with a solid cooling system so your housing doesn’t warp. And please, use high-temperature leads. Nobody wants to deal with melted insulation dripping near the terminals.
